Who was Tutankhamun

Tutankhamun, the famous “child pharaoh,” was born in Amarna in 1341 BCE, inheriting the throne after Ekhnaten. Originally called Tutankhaten, his name reflected the worship of Aton, the solar deity introduced by his predecessor. However, upon taking office, he returned to the pantheon of previous deities and changed his name to Tutankhamun, paying homage to Amun.

Although his reign was marked by brevity and the illness that afflicted him from childhood, he ruled for only 9 years, leaving a legacy that is still talked about. His marriage to Ankhesanamon, his half-sister, involved changing their names to honor Amun, marking a return to Egypt’s religious traditions.

Among his most significant actions, Tutankhamun moved the capital from Amarna to Thebes and commissioned the famous Restoration Stele, an important record of his efforts to restore the cult of Amun. Despite his initiatives, his untimely death at Memphis in 1323 BCE without known heirs fueled the mystery surrounding the end of his dynasty.

His fame, ironically, is mainly related to the discovery of his intact tomb in 1922 by archaeologist Howard Carter, rather than his actions during his lifetime. The wealth and beauty of the treasures found in Tutankhamun’s tomb have captured the imagination of the entire world, making his name synonymous with the mystery and splendor of ancient Egypt.
