Are you ready? Let’s get started!
What is The Ocean Race
“The longest and most challenging professional event in the world”.
The Ocean Race is a round-the-world sailing race, a true ocean marathon and an extremely grueling experience.
Competing sailors sail approximately 32,000 nautical miles, traversing the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans and the difficult waters of the Southern Ocean near Antarctica.
In 2023, The Ocean Race turns 50 years old and for the first time in history will arrive in Italy.
The departure is set for January 15 from Alicante, Spain, and the arrival is scheduled in Genoa with the “Grand Finale” from June 24 to July 2, 2023.
Genoa thus confirms itself as the world capital of sailing and boating.
The new Levante Waterfront will feature the Ocean Live Park with numerous events and an expected attendance of more than 300,000. In addition to the arrival of the 14th edition of The Ocean Race, there will be the “In Port Race” and “The Ocean Race Legends 50th Anniversary Regatta“.
A partnership strongly desired, that between Genoa and The Ocean Race, in the name of sustainability and promotion of Genoese and Ligurian excellence in the world.
In fact, before the world “arrives” in Genoa, it is the Ligurian capital that will go around the world with a 150-square-meter “Pavilion” in which the excellence of the Ligurian territory and “Made in Italy” will be promoted, in each race village.
But where exactly is the arrival of the regatta scheduled?
Where the Ocean Race Genoa takes place
Set up in the new Levante Waterfront in Genoa, the Ocean Live Park will be the beating heart of events and entertainment with numerous activities available to visitors of all ages.
The Opening Ceremony is set for June 24, and the boats are scheduled to arrive the next day.
It will be possible to visit the boats featured in the regatta and meet the sailors. Admire the trophies and get information about the different teams.
There will be no shortage of pure party and celebration moments such as the “Parade of Athletes” and the final awards ceremony.
There will be a pavilion related to sustainability and one on Innovation.
The Italian Sailing Federation will set up two areas in the Jean Nouvel Pavilion: the Next Generation Foil Academy powered by Luna Rossa and the Para Sailing Academy, which will be together for the first time.
Admission to the village will be free.
On the screens in the village it will be possible to see the last hours of the leg thanks to helicopters that will follow the boats and broadcast “live” images.
The program of the Ocean Race Genoa 2023
The program of initiatives and events ashore will also be rich: from the athletes’ parade to the various award ceremonies, from the Ocean Summit at the Magazzini del Cotone, to the numerous activities that will be offered in the village with the Genoa Pavilion (which is touring all the stages in the world), the Sustainability Pavilion and the Innovation Pavilion curated by the Blue District, and also the Paralympic Sailing and Foil Academy activities promoted by FIV Primazona.
The rich program of side events that will be organized both in the village and throughout the city of Genoa is as follows:
- June 27 the Legends Regatta will be held to celebrate 50 years of The Ocean Race.
- June 28-29 more racing between professionals and amateurs, the Pro-Am Races.
- July 1 will stage the “In-Port Race,” which will close the coastal races held at each leg with a specific ranking. In Genoa, it will be discovered which teams are the winners of the In-Port Races series.
- This will be followed by the athletes’ parade and the “Awards Night.”
The stages of the Ocean Race
The Ocean Race is basically a round-the-world race, in which approximately 32,000 miles are covered, across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific oceans, as well as the inhospitable icy depths of the Southern Ocean surrounding the area close to Antarctica.
The route is divided into 8 stages, starting in Alicante (Jan. 15, 2023), then proceeding to Cape Verde, Cape Town, Itajaí, Newport, Aarhus, The Hague, and finally Genoa (expected arrival June 25, 2023).
Here are all the stages of the Ocean Race 2023:
- Alicante (Spain): January 15, 2023
- Cape Verde (Cape Verde): January 22-25, 2023
- Cape Town (South Africa): February 7-26, 2023
- Itajaí (Brazil): April 1-23, 2023
- Newport (USA): May 10-21, 2023
- Aarhus (Denmark): May 30-June 8, 2023
- The Hague (Netherlands): June 11-15, 2023
- Genoa (Italy): June 25, 2023 (Grand Finale)
Why is there so much talk about it?
Because this event represents a great opportunity for Genoa. And to understand why, just take a look at the numbers from past editions.
In the last edition, for example, The Ocean Race attracted 2.5 million visitors to the villages, involved 94,000 kids in the learning program, 20,000 children in the sustainability workshops, and 28,071 kids and adults in “Try Sailing.”
There were 4,356 I media accredited for 2.19 billion TV news audience, 2.62 billion print readers, 117,129 online articles, 1.889 billion social media post impressions, 200.7 million social media video views and 168 million social interactions.
In the last edition, the Village set up in Alicante totaled 345,602 visitors generating an economic impact of about 62 million euros spent in the area with the creation of about 1,700 year-round jobs.
The increase in economic activity and employment produced a significant positive effect totaling 96.2 million GDP growth.
How is Genoa promoted in the world?
In all Ocean Live Parks there will be the Genoa Pavilion, a 150-square-meter pavilion where visitors can explore the beauty of the city and the entire Liguria region while companies can develop new business opportunities with realities from around the world.
A unique opportunity: Genoa will be the only city to have this visibility along the entire route.
A ledwall positioned in front of the structure will show the beauty of Genoa, Liguria and Italy.
Through the scanning of QR Codes it will be possible to delve into the various themes. The pavilion walls will “tell” the story of the area through iconic images: the Lantern, the Historical Shops and the typical “carruggi,” the Cinque Terre, pesto but also ice cream and coffee.
A true immersive experience that will promote Genoa and Liguria through iconic visions will be set up by ETT, a Genoese company of SCAI Group.
Full-wall, seamless multi-projections will put the visitor in an emotional connection with the content through spectacular and rhythmic videos.
The narrative ideally follows the route of the race around the world, with the projection of the regatta’s stages until the arrival in Genoa for the Grand Finale.
The storytelling continues with tourism promotion of Genoa through breathtaking views, images of the city’s most valuable sights, alleyways, historic stores and Palazzi dei Rolli, footage of the preparation of pesto al mortaio, drone flights over urban environments, the Forts and landscapes of the area, outdoor sports activities and the Aquarium.
Finally, a glimpse into the near future with video on the design anticipations of the new Levante Waterfront, which will host the next editions of the Genoa International Boat Show.

Other information
Also competing is an all-Genoese crew
From the partnership between The Austrian Ocean Racing and some important Genoese and Italian companies, “Team Genova” was born, a crew that participates in The Ocean Race regattas in the VO65 Sprint category. First leg Alicante-Capo Verde (Jan. 15), then Aarhus-L’Aja (June 8) and finally The Hague-Genoa (June 15), with arrival in Genoa’s Ocean Live Park. Alongside Genoa, Iren, Sangiorgio Marine, the Italian Navy and the Italian Sailing Federation have entered the field. That between the Austrian boat and the Ligurian capital is, moreover, a relationship that has been increasingly tightening over the past two years.
The young crew led by Dutch skipper Gerwin Jansen had already excited in The Ocean Race Europe. The Austrian- and Italian-flagged boat will feature two Italian sailors, Cecilia Zorzi and Alberto Riva, as well as brothers Konstantin and Oliver Kobale, founders of the Austrian project, Michiel Goegebeur, Anna Luschan, Jolbert Van Dijk, Deborah Blair, Ruaridh Wright, Daniel Gaw and Stefan Leitner.
Genova Process
On March 28, the “Genoa Process” path of “innovation workshops” organized by The Ocean Race in collaboration with the City of Genoa officially opened, involving experts in international law, politics, diplomacy and ocean sciences to define the draft principles of the Declaration of Ocean Rights that will be presented to the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2023.
The capital city of Liguria is at the center of this extraordinary journey, parallel to the crewed sailing around the world. In the Genova Process workshops, results emerging from the Ocean Summits, developed in collaboration with 11th Hour Racing, will be collected. At the end of the regatta, Genoa will host the final Ocean Summit on June 27 at the Magazzini del Cotone in the Old Port, leading to the final document to be presented to the UN.
Sustainability is one of the project’s core values with increasing efforts to restore ocean health and to lead, inspire and engage on this critical issue. The Ocean Race aims to halve greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and achieve zero emissions by 2040. Valuable data on the state of the seas is being collected aboard the competing boats through the on-board science program. A signature collection has also been launched to make Oceans’ voices heard at www.onebluevoice.net.
